Do You Eat Clockwise, Top-Down, or Bite-By-Bite?
Guess which one is Anikah's burrito bowl?

There is an immutable war going on in my marriage, one that began thirteen years ago over a 5-ounce blueberry yogurt, but nowadays resurfaces whenever Chipotle burrito bowls are involved.

You see, much to my husband’s disgust, I do not stir my flavored yogurt. Instead, I keep the layers of jam and yogurt separate so I can control their ratios in each bite. I also do not and will never mix up my burrito bowl — I tackle it from right to left, carefully digging through each row of ingredients for that perfect forkful of rice, meat, and fixings while keeping the tiers intact.

Charlie, who prefers to jumble the contents of his bowl into a mushy amalgam (like a barbarian), calls my methodical (and decisive) approach to eating “psychotic.” I, of course, think he’s wrong. But no matter how uncompromising our convictions may be, we are still quite fond of each other. Thus, for now, we’ve shaken hands and called a truce.

While I might be able to let this one go for the sake of my marriage, I am too easily enticed by unresolved mysteries. So I set out to investigate why Charlie and I eat the same things in such different ways. And why we are so ardent and dogmatic about how we approach the food on our plates. But most importantly (perhaps out of vindication), I want to know whose way is the right way.
